No traces of contaminations, chemicals or other residues may be found in the water, in order to qualify as pharmaceutical water. The thing is that this type of Ultra Pure Water (UPW) needs to be used directly after production or stored under sterile conditions. If not, then contaminants can once again contaminate the water. Water for injection needs to be completely sterile before it can be used. The reason for this is simple. As the name implies, it is used in medicine that eventually ends up in our bodies. The required water quality can be achieved by a process called electrodeionization followed by a sterilization process.
